Wow - it's a pretty out of body experience to be within close proximity to James Taylor. I mean, the man is a complete legend. He just finished playing "Country Roads," and I think is now playing a cover called "Cry Baby Cry." "Cry Baby Cry," is over...and he just busted into a jazzy rendition of "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," from Oklahoma! Haha, gotta love it!
Not only does this guy have a never ending catalogue of hits, but he honestly sounds better live than on studio recordings. I can't wait to get down to the lawn and listen.
I now have a functional MPEG 4 video camera, so you'll start seeing some more footage of pre-show Wolf Trap activity which I'll post on youtube and here on the blog. Check in here tomorrow for a pair of pre-James Taylor performance videos, the best of which features a riotus 2000 person lawn rush from the main gates. I've been to sold out Wolf Trap shows, but this one just feels MORE sold out than the others, which is indicative by the sea of people rushing the lawn, many of whom have been waiting for this event to occur at Wolf Trap for the last 30 years. It's a very cool experience to be part of this evening's show, and it certainly shows in our patrons faces.
In addition to the promised video, I'll hopefully have some still photos and a set list from tonight's performance.
Talk soon,
Graham

we rarely do weekday concerts at the Trap cuz we live in Fredericksburg and get up at 3 a.m. to go to work in DC, but i had to be there for James. i've been listening to Sweet Baby James on vinyl every few months for 40 years and have never seen him live - but to see him at the Trap, one of my favorite venues in the world, and see him, like the man said, singing better than ever, was magical - we did leave at 10:15, to make sure we got at least 3 hours of sleep, so we didn't get to hear Fire & Rain which i assume was the encore? Great, great show!!
According to the setlist I have, his encore was "How Sweet it is (to be Loved by You.)" I left just around 10:15 as well. I'll check with our production department, and will post the set list later today so you can see what you missed.
It was a fabulous concert!! Though it was almost marred by a crotchedy old curmudgeon sitting in the "inner circle" who loudly and rudely complained about it being two loud (mind you - from the 2nd row of a rock concert) after the first song.
Though it clearly seemed to fluster JT, he had a smart retort that displayed true class. Bravo. And the rest of the audience rallied the band and showed their appreciation.
Please tell me some measures were taken to ensure that party pooper, no matter how major a donor, is not welcome in the inner circle again.
Yah, we were up in the loge, but we heard the grouches complaint and wondered what the heck was going on! now we know, so thanks. i've been to shows at the Trap as diverse as C,S,N to Travis Tritt to Mel Torme to I think, my all time favorite (up till James) - the one and only Monkees when thousands of all folks like us stood up the whole time and sang along! You kinda already know what you're gonna see before you go so what's to complain? Did the old crock get up and leave, or did he tough it out? --James' between song comments were right on the mark, and funny....
I was there to see James Taylor. We were in line for lawn seats. They gates opened an it was like they were all running from a fire! I didn't understand until I saw everyone running to get the best lawn seating. I've never seen that lemming run before. It was quite a sight to see the whole lawn filled in 30 seconds! We got the perfect spot, just where I wanted to be.
I would love to see the video you promised. I already told people about it, sight unseen. Can't wait to see it.
Thanks,
Steve
Spotslytuckian - not sure what happened with the aforementioned patrons. I think he left after the first set. I guess if you sit in the pit, you should probably expect the show to be pretty loud...glad you had a great time however!
Vistamonkey - James Taylor lawn rush video is up, enjoy!
Thanks for your comments, keep em comin'!
Cheers,
Graham
