Barns Staff Picks: Strings, Folk and Bluegrass

This post is from Melissa Chotiner.

Today 78 shows at The Barns at Wolf Trap are on sale! Here are four very different types of performances I am adding to my fall and winter social calendar.

The Ahn Trio - October 14

As part of the Wolf Trap Discovery Series, The Ahn Trio, will perform BraziliAHN, a co-commission from Wolf Trap in celebration of Founders Day. These three Korean sisters based in New York City are not your traditional classical piano trio. Their sound is funky and brings a "...modern take on piano, violin and cello," as dubbed by the TED conference in 2010 where they performed.

Sonny Landreth - Oct. 27 and 28

Sonny Landreth, who performed on The Annual Louisiana Swamp Romp program this summer at The Filene Center, returns to The Barns with his bluesy / cajun guitar sounds. NPR did an interesting interview with Landreth a few years ago where he talks about his life and music. He will be a guest musician on a new album coming out from Johnny Winter next month.

Catie Curtis - November 18th,

Catie Curtis will be joined by special guest Meg Hutchinson at The Barns. Catie's sweet voice, folk guitar and talent for song writing have gained her a good deal of recognition. You may have heard some of her music on hit TV shows like Grey's Anatomy and Dawson's Creek. In 2006, she and Mark Erelli won grand prize in the International Song Writing competition for "People Look Around," written for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Her latest album, "Stretch Limousine on Fire," (this will be number 12) will be coming out at the end of this month. We'll likely get a taste of some of the tracks when she's here in November.

Red Molly - January 20

Red Molly takes the stage in their Wolf Trap debut at The Barns. If you are not a "Redhead" (fan of Red Molly) already, you may be after you check out some of the original folk songs like "Jezebel" and "Beaumont Rest Stop" as well as covers like "Are you Lonesome Tonight" and "Caleb Meyer" from this New York City-based trio. Random tidbit - "Caleb Meyer" is Gillian Welch's song who performed with Garrison Keiller last summer at The Filene Center.

We'll be bringing you more news and information about Barns artists throughout the season, so stay tuned. Let us know who you are looking forward to seeing or who you'd like to see here.
